Chapter 9 - The Hospital Record

Arthur opened another section of the folder.
“The child was born with a minor congenital heart irregularity.”
Melinda immediately stood.
“You said you wouldn’t discuss his health.”
“I will not reveal his private diagnosis,” Arthur replied. “But the medical history submitted at birth matters.”
Kirsten understood before he finished.
The hospital would have requested family medical information.
Connor had supplied his.
Melinda had supplied hers.
Neither had supplied Kirsten’s.
Arthur continued.
“The infant’s symptoms matched a condition found in Kirsten’s maternal family.”
The birthmark.
Her brother.
The old photograph.
Kirsten’s knees nearly weakened.
“If the doctors had known,” she whispered, “they could have screened him sooner.”
Melinda started sobbing.
“I asked Connor why the baby looked like you.”
Connor’s eyes flashed.
“And I told you genetics are unpredictable.”
“You told me never to contact Kirsten.”
Connor looked around the corridor, measuring the witnesses.
His wedding ring caught the fluorescent light as his hand clenched.
“This is being exaggerated.”
Arthur’s voice became lethal.
“A child’s medical history was hidden to protect your lie.”
