Chapter 7 - Why Melinda Agreed

Melinda suddenly sank into a waiting chair.
The stroller remained in front of her.
The toddler watched her with growing confusion.
“I couldn’t get pregnant,” she whispered.
Connor glared at her.
“Stop.”
But Melinda kept speaking.
“I had two miscarriages before I ever met you, Kirsten. I never told anyone except Connor.”
Kirsten remembered the nights Melinda had held her after failed fertility appointments.
The advice.
The sympathy.
The tears that Kirsten had believed were for her.
“You knew about our embryos,” Kirsten said.
Melinda nodded once.
“Connor said the marriage was over. He said the embryos were legally his too.”
Arthur shook his head.
“They were not.”
Melinda’s voice cracked.
“He showed me a consent form.”
“The forged one,” Kirsten replied.
Melinda looked at Connor.
“You told me she signed it.”
Connor’s face became rigid.
“I told you what was necessary.”
Walter stared at him.
“Necessary for what?”
Connor did not answer.
But Kirsten began to understand.
Connor had not simply wanted a child.
He wanted a child quickly enough to prove that Kirsten had been the problem.
A pregnancy with Melinda would make him look fertile, desirable and victorious.
Using Kirsten’s embryo guaranteed him a genetically related child without another long treatment process.
