Chapter 4 - The Missing Embryo

Kirsten turned toward Arthur.
“What dates?”
Arthur did not answer immediately.
He looked at the waiting patients, then at Connor.
“This should be discussed privately.”
Connor recovered enough of his arrogance to laugh.
“No. She wanted a scene by standing here. Let her hear it here.”
Kirsten stared at him.
She had not created the scene.
He had.
But Connor still believed volume could control truth.
Arthur opened the folder again.
“The fertility clinic conducted an internal audit three weeks ago.”
Connor’s jaw tightened.
“One of Kirsten’s frozen embryos is missing.”
The corridor became completely silent.
Kirsten felt the handbag slip in her fingers.
“That’s impossible.”
Arthur’s voice softened only when he looked at her.
“The storage record was altered.”
Melinda began shaking her head.
“No. That’s not what happened.”
Walter looked at his daughter with open disgust.
“Then tell her what happened.”
Connor stepped between them.
“This is confidential medical information.”
Arthur’s eyes hardened.
“Interesting that you know exactly what kind of information it is.”
Connor stopped breathing for one visible second.
Kirsten looked at the toddler again.
