Chapter 14 - The Message That Proved Everything

Melinda unlocked her phone.
Her fingers shook so violently that she entered the code incorrectly twice.
Connor moved toward her.
Walter stepped behind the stroller.
Arthur stood beside Kirsten.
Connor stopped.
Melinda opened an old conversation and handed the phone to Kirsten.
The first message was dated three weeks before the embryo transfer.
Connor: Kirsten will never know one is missing.
Another followed.
Connor: Once you’re pregnant, everyone will believe she was the problem.
Then:
Connor: I can reproduce her signature. She signs medical forms every day.
Kirsten read the final message twice.
Connor: After the baby is born, the inheritance clause activates.
She looked up.
“What inheritance?”
Connor’s face collapsed.
Arthur removed the last document from the folder.
Kirsten’s late grandmother had created a family trust years earlier.
A portion would pass to Kirsten and her spouse upon the birth of their biological child.
The trust had grown to more than twelve million dollars.
Connor had never wanted only public victory.
He had wanted the money tied to Kirsten’s bloodline.
By using her embryo before the divorce, he believed he could claim the child had been conceived during the marriage and force access to the trust.
Melinda stared at him in horror.
“You said the money came from your company.”

Connor backed into the reception desk.
👉 The baby Connor presented as proof of Kirsten’s failure had actually been used as the key to steal her family fortune.
