Chapter 13 - Connor’s Last Performance

Connor turned toward the watching patients.
“This is a family dispute. My ex-wife is exploiting confidential information because she’s jealous.”
No one looked convinced.
He pointed at Kirsten.
“She couldn’t carry a pregnancy, so now she wants Melinda’s baby.”
Kirsten’s face went still.
Arthur moved toward Connor, but Kirsten raised one hand.
She did not need protection from words anymore.
“My thyroid condition was temporary,” she said. “My physicians cleared me for pregnancy fourteen months ago.”
Connor blinked.
He had not known.
“I never told you,” Kirsten continued, “because by then you had already left.”
A nurse near the reception desk lowered her eyes, visibly affected.
Kirsten stepped closer.
“You spent years telling people I was incapable of giving you a family.”
Connor said nothing.
“You knew my condition could improve. You knew we had viable embryos. But waiting would not let you play the victim.”
His jaw clenched.
“I wanted a child.”
“You wanted an audience.”
The sentence silenced him.
Kirsten looked around the corridor Connor had chosen for her humiliation.
“You brought that audience here today.”
Then she held out her hand toward Melinda.
“The messages.”
