Chapter 1 - The Hand on the Door

Daniel’s fingers closed around the wardrobe handle.

Rachel stood inside the darkness, one hand pressed over her mouth, the other gripping her phone so tightly her nails cut into her palm.

Through the narrow opening, she watched her husband’s expression change.

A moment earlier, Daniel had been smiling as he poured several drops from a small dark bottle onto her pillow.

“Soon, everything will finally belong to me,” he had whispered.

Then his phone rang.

“It’s done,” he told someone. “She won’t know anything.”

Now he was staring directly at the wardrobe.

“Rachel…”

Her lungs burned from holding her breath.

For six months, Daniel had told doctors that Rachel’s unexplained headaches, muscle weakness, confusion, and nausea were symptoms of anxiety.

He brought her tea.

He massaged her shoulders.

He changed her pillowcases every morning.

Everyone called him a devoted husband.

Rachel had almost believed she was losing her mind.

Until that night.

Daniel slowly pulled the wardrobe door.

Rachel shoved it outward with all her strength.

The door struck his shoulder, sending the bottle from his hand.

It rolled beneath the bed.

Rachel ran.

Daniel grabbed the back of her blouse, but the fabric tore. She stumbled through the bedroom door and sprinted barefoot down the mansion’s marble hallway.

“Rachel, stop!” he called. “You’re confused!”

She reached the staircase.

Her weakened legs almost folded beneath her.

Daniel was only a few steps behind.

Rachel turned and held up her phone.

“I recorded you.”

His face went still.

For the first time in eleven years of marriage, she saw what lived beneath his handsome smile.

Not love.

Calculation.

“You don’t understand what you saw,” he said quietly.

Rachel backed toward the stairs.

“I understand enough.”

Daniel lunged.

Rachel threw a brass candleholder through the window beside the front door.

Glass shattered across the floor.

The mansion’s security alarm screamed.

Daniel froze.

Outside, headlights appeared beyond the gate.

A black SUV rolled slowly into the circular driveway.

Daniel looked through the broken window—and all the anger drained from his face.

A woman stepped from the vehicle.
