Chapter 4 - The Doctor’s Confession

Rachel hesitated only one second before entering Elaine’s car.

Daniel’s flashlight appeared through the open service gate.

Elaine accelerated.

The mansion disappeared behind them.

Rachel locked the doors.

“Where are you taking me?”

“Somewhere Daniel won’t look first.”

“Why should I trust you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

Elaine’s answer was immediate.

She drove with both hands tight around the wheel.

For months, Elaine had treated Rachel’s symptoms as an autoimmune disorder complicated by stress. She ordered endless tests, prescribed sedatives, and repeatedly advised Rachel to let Daniel manage her financial decisions.

Now she looked terrified.

“Daniel paid me to alter your laboratory results,” Elaine said.

Rachel stared at her.

“How much?”

“Fifty thousand dollars.”

“You helped him poison me for fifty thousand dollars?”

“I didn’t know about the poison at first. He told me you were addicted to prescription medication and needed controlled records during a private intervention.”

“That makes no sense.”

“I know.”

Elaine’s eyes filled with shame.

“When I questioned him, he showed me documents saying he had medical power of attorney. They looked real.”

“They weren’t.”

“I realized that last week.”

Elaine had secretly sent Rachel’s blood to an independent toxicology laboratory. The results showed repeated exposure to a synthetic nerve agent in tiny doses.

The compound could be absorbed through skin contact and inhalation.

“From my pillow,” Rachel whispered.

“And possibly your laundry, cosmetics, and air vents.”

Rachel leaned back, nauseated.

Her entire home had become a delivery system.

Elaine handed her a sealed envelope from the center console.

Inside were blood reports, altered medical charts, bank transfers from Daniel, and copies of instructions he had sent through encrypted messages.

Rachel studied one message.

Keep her functional until August 18. After the signing, increase exposure.

“What happens on August eighteenth?”

Elaine looked at her.

“That’s tomorrow.”

The car suddenly jerked.

A warning light flashed across the dashboard.

Elaine tried the brakes.

Nothing happened.

They were descending a steep hill toward an intersection.

“Daniel serviced my car yesterday,” Elaine said.

Rachel pulled the emergency brake.

It did not respond.

A truck crossed the road below them.

Elaine swerved, sending the car through a wooden barrier and down a grassy slope.

The vehicle crashed into a tree.

Rachel’s head struck the window.

For several seconds, everything was silent.

Then she smelled gasoline.

Elaine was unconscious.

Rachel tried to open her door, but it was crushed shut.

Behind them, another car stopped at the top of the hill.

Daniel stepped out.

👉 Rachel had escaped the mansion with proof in her hands, but Daniel had followed them—and the wrecked car was already beginning to burn.
