Chapter 11 - Her Father’s Last File

Samuel did not deny knowing Daniel was dangerous.
He asked Rachel to meet him privately inside her father’s old office.
The room had remained locked since Arthur Cole died three years earlier.
Samuel opened a hidden compartment behind a bookshelf.
Inside were folders labeled with Daniel’s name.
“Your father investigated him,” Samuel said.
Rachel felt betrayed all over again.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“He tried. You believed Daniel had changed.”
Rachel remembered the arguments.
Arthur had called Daniel charming, impatient, and hungry for power.
Rachel accused her father of being controlling.
She stopped taking his calls for nearly six months.
“He didn’t want to lose you again,” Samuel said.
The files showed Daniel had used three different surnames before marrying Vanessa. He was suspected of financial fraud, elder exploitation, and manipulating vulnerable women.
Arthur gathered evidence but died before completing the investigation.
His death was ruled a heart attack.
Rachel slowly looked up.
“Was it?”
Samuel gave her a toxicology report.
Arthur’s stored blood sample had recently tested positive for the same synthetic compound found in Rachel.
Daniel had poisoned her father too.
Rachel sat down hard.
Daniel had been present during Arthur’s final weeks.
He brought him special tea.
He persuaded Rachel that her father’s confusion was dementia.
The pattern was identical.
“We can prove the compound was present,” Samuel said. “But not who administered it.”
Rachel opened the last folder.
Inside was a photograph of Daniel meeting Judge Hale, Dr. Porter, and Vanessa at a private club.
Elaine had been involved years before Rachel’s illness.
When confronted, Elaine admitted Daniel first recruited her during Arthur’s treatment.
She altered one lab result after Daniel threatened to expose her prescription-drug addiction.
“I helped hide the first dose,” she confessed. “I told myself Arthur was dying anyway.”
Rachel turned away in disgust.
Elaine began crying.
“There was another witness. Arthur’s night nurse.”
“Who?”
“Her name was June Harris. She disappeared the week he died.”
Detective Bell searched employment records.
June had not disappeared.
She was living under a new name in rural New Mexico.
Hours later, police located her.
June answered the video call with tears in her eyes.
“I’ve been waiting for someone to find me,” she said.

Then she held up a sealed evidence bag containing a second dark bottle.
👉 The nurse who watched Rachel’s father die had preserved the first poison bottle—and she remembered exactly whose hand placed it beside his tea.
