Chapter 9 - The Dead Woman in Court

Judge Hale called Vanessa to the witness stand.
Daniel’s attorney rose immediately.
“This woman cannot be verified. She is using a false identity.”
Vanessa placed an original marriage certificate on the evidence table.
“My legal name is Vanessa Cole Mercer.”
Whispers spread through the courtroom.
Rachel looked at Daniel.
His confident expression finally cracked.
Vanessa described their marriage, the staged attack, and the years she spent hiding under false identities.
Daniel’s attorney attacked her credibility.
“You committed identity fraud.”
“Because your client convinced me murderers were hunting me.”
“You helped him forge documents belonging to Rachel Mercer.”
“Yes.”
“So you are a confessed criminal asking this court to trust you.”
Vanessa looked at the judge.
“No. I’m asking the court to examine Daniel’s first marriage certificate.”
If Daniel had never divorced Vanessa, his marriage to Rachel was legally invalid.
He had no automatic spousal authority over her medical care or trust.
Judge Hale’s face tightened.
He declared the certificate potentially fraudulent and ordered it excluded pending verification.
Rachel stood.
“You knew about this.”
Hale struck his gavel.
“Sit down.”
“You accepted Daniel’s money.”
Another gavel strike echoed through the room.
“Counsel, control your client.”
Rachel had no attorney. Daniel had canceled her legal representation using the psychiatric order.
Then the courtroom doors opened.
An elderly man entered with a cane.
Rachel recognized him as Samuel Price, her late father’s estate attorney.
Samuel had supposedly retired in Europe.
“I represent Rachel Mercer,” he announced.
Daniel went pale.
Samuel presented a notarized letter Rachel’s father had written before his death.
It stated that if anyone attempted to declare Rachel incompetent within ten years of his death, control of the trust would automatically transfer to an independent board—not to her spouse.
Daniel could never obtain the assets through guardianship.
Rachel looked at him.
“All of this was for nothing.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with rage.
But Samuel continued.
“There is another provision. Any spouse who intentionally harms Rachel forfeits all benefits and triggers a forensic audit of every marital account.”
Judge Hale tried to adjourn the hearing.
Detective Bell stepped forward.
“You’re not leaving, Your Honor.”
Federal agents entered through both doors.
They had recovered enough of the erased data to trace payments directly to Hale.
The judge stood abruptly.
Then the lights flickered.
A fire alarm began ringing.

Daniel disappeared through a side door.
👉 The competency scheme had collapsed, but Daniel escaped the courthouse carrying the only original bottle that could prove exactly how he poisoned Rachel.
