Chapter 3 - The Locked Gate

Rachel ran toward the front door.

Daniel seized her wrist.

His grip was hard enough to bruise.

“You’re sick,” he said through clenched teeth. “No jury will believe anything you say.”

Rachel drove her knee into his leg.

He released her with a curse.

She reached the driveway and ran barefoot toward the gate. Cold stone tore at her feet, but she kept moving.

Behind her, Daniel shouted into the house.

“Vanessa, get the car!”

Rachel reached the security keypad.

Her code failed.

She entered it again.

ACCESS DENIED.

Daniel had changed the locks.

The iron gate stood twelve feet high, with sharp decorative points along the top. Rachel could not climb it in her condition.

Vanessa’s black SUV roared to life behind her.

Rachel searched desperately for somewhere to hide.

A groundskeeper’s shed stood near the wall.

She reached it seconds before the SUV crossed the driveway.

The shed was unlocked.

Inside were gardening tools, fertilizer bags, and an old landline phone covered in dust.

Rachel dialed 911.

Nothing happened.

The line had been cut.

Through a crack in the wooden door, she saw Daniel walking across the lawn with a flashlight.

“Rachel,” he called calmly. “Come inside before you hurt yourself.”

Vanessa followed several yards behind him.

“You said the dose would leave her barely conscious.”

“I reduced it yesterday,” Daniel whispered. “I needed her lucid enough to sign.”

“Sign what?”

“The revised trust.”

Rachel pressed her fist against her mouth.

Her father had left her the mansion, several commercial properties, and control of a family investment company worth more than forty million dollars.

Daniel could live comfortably from the marital trust.

But he could not sell the main assets without Rachel’s signature.

That was why he had kept her alive.

He needed her weak, confused, and legally incompetent—but still able to sign.

Daniel came closer.

Rachel looked around the shed.

On a shelf sat the old remote for the property’s irrigation system.

She pressed every button.

Sprinklers exploded to life across the lawn.

Daniel spun as water struck his face.

Using the noise as cover, Rachel slipped from the shed and ran along the stone wall.

Near the back garden, she found a small service gate hidden behind ivy.

It required a physical key.

Rachel reached into her torn pocket and found the antique key her late father had insisted she always carry.

It fit.

The gate opened.

As Rachel stepped onto the dark road outside, she heard Vanessa shouting behind her.

Then a second vehicle stopped nearby.

The passenger window lowered.

Dr. Elaine Porter stared at Rachel.
