Chapter 7 - Daniel’s First Wife

Vanessa placed the flash drive on the hospital table.
“I was married to Daniel before you.”
Rachel stared at her.
Daniel had always said his only previous serious relationship ended before college.
Vanessa opened an old wedding photograph on the room’s computer.
Daniel looked younger, but the smile was identical.
“When?”
“Fourteen years ago.”
“Why isn’t there a divorce record?”
“Because he told everyone I died.”
Vanessa had worked with Daniel at an investment firm in Dallas. When she discovered he was stealing from client accounts, she threatened to report him.
Days later, she survived a staged home invasion.
Daniel convinced her that the thieves were connected to powerful criminals and would kill her unless she disappeared.
He gave her false identification and moved her to Mexico.
“For years, I thought he was protecting me,” Vanessa said. “Then I learned he was the person I needed protection from.”
“Why come back?”
“He found me two years ago. He said if I helped him gain control of your trust, he would let me keep my new life.”
Rachel’s anger sharpened.
“So you helped poison me.”
“I helped forge documents. I delivered bottles without knowing what they contained.”
“You heard him say I wasn’t supposed to be strong enough tonight.”
Vanessa looked away.
“I suspected.”
“That makes you responsible.”
“I know.”
The flash drive contained Daniel’s original marriage certificate, financial crimes, fake identities, recordings, and a spreadsheet listing payments to Judge Hale.
There was also a file named RACHEL—PHASE THREE.
Inside were photographs of Rachel sleeping.
Medical schedules.
Copies of her father’s trust.
And a life-insurance policy worth fifteen million dollars.
Daniel was the beneficiary.
Rachel looked at the effective date.
It began the day after the competency hearing.
“He planned to take the assets first,” Rachel whispered. “Then kill me.”
Vanessa nodded.
“I came to the mansion because he ordered me to remove the bottle and replace the pillow. When I saw you watching, I knew he would kill both of us.”
Detective Bell copied the drive.
But before he could call for an arrest warrant, the hospital lights went out.
Emergency power activated.
The electronic lock on Rachel’s room released.
Footsteps approached in the corridor.
Vanessa looked through the window.
May you like
Daniel was walking toward them in a doctor’s coat.
👉 Daniel had entered the locked hospital before police could secure the evidence, and the syringe in his hand showed he was done pretending Rachel’s death would be natural.
