Vanessa underwent emergency surgery.
The bullet had missed her heart by less than an inch.
Rachel waited outside the operating room beside June.

Bell searched the tunnels but found an exit near the river.

But Daniel remained dangerous.

“He was proud.”
“He pitied you.”

He went silent.
That frightened her more than shouting would have.
Then he said, “Come to the Lake Travis house alone, or Dr. Porter dies.”
Elaine had disappeared from protective custody that morning.
Daniel sent a photograph showing her tied to a chair in the vacation house where Rachel and Daniel once celebrated their anniversaries.
Bell wanted to surround the property.
Rachel agreed to wear a tracking device and hidden microphone.
At sunset, she entered the lake house alone.
Elaine sat near the window with tape across her mouth.
Daniel stood behind her.
“You came.”
“I’m done letting you use other people to control me.”
He handed Rachel a legal document.
It transferred her entire trust into an offshore account.
“Sign it.”
“The trust is frozen.”
“Samuel gave you emergency signing authority this afternoon.”
Daniel still had access to confidential information.
Someone inside Rachel’s legal team was helping him.
She looked at Elaine.
“Who told him?”
Elaine’s eyes shifted toward the kitchen.
Samuel Price stepped out holding a gun.
“I’m sorry, Rachel,” he said.
