Chapter 6 - The Psychiatric Hold

Police questioned everyone at the scene.
Elaine gave them the envelope and explained Daniel’s payments.
Daniel denied everything.
He claimed the bank transfers were consulting fees and the messages had been fabricated.
Then he produced paperwork.
A judge’s emergency order authorized Rachel’s involuntary psychiatric evaluation.
The order had been signed that afternoon.
Two officers approached her cautiously.
Rachel looked at Elaine.
“This is what he planned.”
Daniel lowered his voice.
“I’m trying to save you from yourself.”
“You poisoned me.”
“You believe I poisoned your pillow because you were hiding inside a wardrobe.”
The officers exchanged uncertain looks.
Daniel knew exactly how it sounded.
Rachel’s fear.
The dark bedroom.
The broken window.
The car crash.
He had arranged every fact to make her appear unstable.
At the hospital, Rachel was placed in a locked evaluation room while toxicology tests were processed.
Daniel remained legally recognized as her medical proxy.
He instructed staff not to let her contact an attorney.
But Elaine had photographed the independent blood results before surrendering the envelope.
She emailed them to Detective Marcus Bell, the officer investigating the crash.
Hours later, Bell entered Rachel’s room.
“We confirmed your blood contains the compound.”
Rachel almost collapsed with relief.
“Then arrest him.”
“We can prove exposure. We can’t yet prove Daniel administered it.”
“What about Elaine’s recording?”
“The audio is damaged. We’re recovering it.”
Bell also revealed something worse.
The judge who signed the psychiatric order was Daniel’s longtime friend, Judge Warren Hale.
Hale had authorized Daniel to control Rachel’s healthcare and temporarily manage her trust if she was declared incompetent.
The competency hearing was scheduled for the next morning.
August eighteenth.
The date in Daniel’s message.
“He doesn’t need my signature,” Rachel realized. “He needs the court to replace it.”
Bell nodded.
“If you’re ruled incompetent, Daniel gains control of your assets.”
A nurse appeared at the door.
“Mrs. Cole is here.”
Rachel’s heart stopped.
Vanessa entered wearing a hospital badge.
Detective Bell turned toward her.
“I’m Rachel’s sister,” Vanessa said.
Rachel stared at her.
“I don’t have a sister.”
Vanessa closed the door.
Then she removed a small flash drive from her purse.

“No,” she said. “But Daniel has spent twelve years making sure you never learned who I really am.”
👉 Vanessa had helped Daniel trap Rachel, yet the secret on her flash drive could destroy the entire reason he married her.
