Chapter 12 - The Nurse Who Ran

June Harris arrived in Austin under federal protection.
She looked older than her fifty-seven years.
Her hands shook as she faced Rachel.
“I’m sorry I left.”
“Tell me what happened.”
June had been caring for Arthur during his final month. She noticed he became confused only after Daniel visited.
One night, she watched Daniel pour liquid from a dark bottle into Arthur’s tea.
When she confronted him, Daniel offered her one hundred thousand dollars.
She refused.
The next morning, someone broke into her apartment and left photographs of her grandchildren on the table.
June fled.
Before leaving Arthur’s house, she took the bottle from Daniel’s coat.
“I thought I could come back when my family was safe,” she said. “Then Arthur died.”
Forensic testing confirmed the residue matched the compound in Rachel’s blood and the bottle recovered from the courthouse garage.
Daniel was charged with Arthur’s murder.
Judge Hale was arrested for bribery, fraud, obstruction, and abuse of judicial authority.
Elaine lost her medical license and faced conspiracy charges, though prosecutors considered leniency because she had eventually exposed the poisoning.
Vanessa accepted responsibility for forgery and evidence tampering.
She agreed to testify against Daniel.
Rachel believed the nightmare was finally reaching its end.
Then Detective Bell received a call from the county jail.
Daniel had been attacked in his cell.
He survived with a broken jaw and several fractured ribs.
The attacker claimed Daniel had arranged a payment through a secret account.
Bell understood immediately.
Daniel had ordered the assault on himself.
“Why would he do that?” Rachel asked.
“To force a transfer to a private medical unit.”
The unit was operated by a contractor partly owned by one of Daniel’s former companies.
By the time authorities reached it, Daniel was gone.
A nurse had been found unconscious.
A transport van was missing.
Rachel returned to the mansion under police protection.
Her bedroom remained sealed as a crime scene.
She stood in the doorway, staring at the pillow where the nightmare began.
On the bed lay a fresh white envelope.
No one knew how it had arrived.
Inside was a photograph taken that afternoon.
Rachel and June were standing outside the federal courthouse.
A red circle had been drawn around June’s face.
Beneath it, Daniel had written:
May you like
SHE SHOULD HAVE KEPT RUNNING.
👉 Daniel had escaped custody, and the only witness who could convict him of murder had become his next target.
