Chapter 18 - The Crash on Lake Travis
Rachel reached for the throttle.
Daniel grabbed her ankle.
Elaine pulled the wheel left.
The speedboat struck a floating dock instead of the rocks.
Wood exploded beneath the hull.
Rachel was thrown into the lake.
Cold black water closed over her head.
For a moment, she could not tell which direction was up.
Her weakened muscles stopped responding.
Then a hand caught her wrist.
Elaine pulled her toward the surface.
They reached a broken section of dock.
Daniel was nowhere in sight.
Federal boats surrounded the wreck.
Divers entered the water.
After eleven minutes, they found Daniel beneath the overturned hull.
He was unconscious but alive.
Rachel watched paramedics revive him.
Again, he survived.
This time, he woke in a federal prison hospital with agents outside every door.
Samuel confessed.
He provided records proving Daniel had planned Arthur’s murder, Rachel’s poisoning, the false psychiatric diagnosis, the court scheme, and the staged car crash.
Vanessa recovered from surgery.
She agreed to plead guilty to reduced charges in exchange for full cooperation.
Elaine also pleaded guilty to falsifying medical records and conspiracy. Her testimony and later efforts to save Rachel were considered during sentencing, but she still faced prison.
Rachel visited Daniel once before trial.
He sat behind reinforced glass, thinner and less polished than before.
“You came to forgive me,” he said.
“No.”
His smile faded.
“I came because you spent eleven years believing I would collapse without you.”
Rachel placed a copy of Arthur’s recording against the glass.
“My father saw you clearly. Vanessa survived you. Elaine exposed you. June remembered you. And I watched you poison my pillow.”
Daniel looked away.
“You needed all of them.”
“Yes,” Rachel said. “That is the difference between us. I don’t mistake isolation for strength.”
She stood to leave.
Daniel pressed his hand against the glass.
“I loved you.”
Rachel stopped at the door.
“You loved having access to me.”
Then she walked away without looking back.
The federal trial began three months later.
On the first morning, prosecutors revealed that Daniel had poisoned more than two people.
