Chapter 1 - Stop Acting
Julian Vance ripped the white hospital blanket from his pregnant wife’s legs.
“Stop acting.”
The fabric snapped through the air and fell beside his polished shoes.
For one terrible second, nobody moved.
Then Julian saw the bruises.
Dark marks covered Clara’s thighs from her knees upward. Some were deep and fresh. Others had begun to fade. Together, they formed a silent history of pain no one in the room could explain away.
Clara recoiled against the tufted white headboard.
One hand flew protectively over her swollen belly.
The other clawed weakly at the sheet.
Julian’s anger vanished.
His mouth remained open, but no sound came out.
Behind him, his mother stood in an emerald-green suit, one finger pointed toward Clara like a judge delivering a sentence.
Eleanor Vance had entered the private Manhattan maternity suite with confidence.
Beside her stood Dominic Vance, the family attorney, holding a leather portfolio filled with custody papers and psychiatric evaluations.
They had arrived prepared.
Clara had been told to sign.
If she refused, Eleanor promised to prove she was unstable.
If she fought back, Dominic would petition for emergency guardianship over the baby.
Julian had believed them.
He had believed his wife was pretending to be weak to delay the paperwork.
Then he saw her legs.
The bed rail rattled as he stumbled backward.
Clara reached toward him, her fingertips barely touching his wrist.
“Don’t let them take her.”
Julian looked down at the unborn child beneath her hand.
Eleanor stepped forward.
“She bruised herself.”
Clara did not argue.
She only lifted her eyes toward the ceiling ventilation grate.
“Look up.”
Julian followed her gaze.
A tiny red light blinked inside the vent.
His face hardened.
He turned toward his mother.
“What did you do?”
Clara pressed the hidden call button beneath the sheet.
A soft electronic tone sounded.
Then she whispered the words that drained the confidence from every face in the room.
