Chapter 8 - The Night Clara Was Cornered

The bruises had been inflicted the previous evening.

Not by one person.

By a system.

Clara had gone to the Vance penthouse after Eleanor asked to discuss the baby shower.

She knew it was a trap.

Mara had warned her not to go.

But Clara needed proof of the family’s intent.

She wore a small recorder inside her notebook.

When she arrived, Eleanor was waiting with two household employees and the family physician.

Dominic joined by video call.

A psychiatric commitment form was already prepared.

Eleanor asked Clara to surrender access to the trust.

Clara refused.

The physician said refusal proved paranoia.

Clara stood to leave.

The two employees blocked the elevator.

Eleanor told her they only wanted her to rest.

Then she ordered the staff to take Clara to a guest room.

Clara resisted.

One employee gripped her upper arm.

The other trapped her legs against a low bench while trying to remove her phone.

Clara fought to protect her stomach.

Her legs struck the bench repeatedly.

That created the bruises.

She managed to press the emergency button in the elevator hall.

A building concierge entered.

The staff released her instantly.

Eleanor claimed Clara had suffered a panic attack.

The concierge called a car.

Clara reached the hospital lobby before collapsing.

Now, in the maternity suite, Clara told Julian the entire story.

He listened without interrupting.

“Why didn’t you call me?”

“I did.”

Julian checked his phone.

There were no missed calls.

Mara asked to see the device.

After a brief examination, she found Clara’s number had been temporarily blocked.

Julian stared at the screen.

“My mother had my phone yesterday.”

Clara’s eyes remained cold.

“She made sure I couldn’t reach you.”

Julian whispered, “And I believed her.”

“Yes.”

He looked toward the documents.

Then toward the bruises.

“What do you need me to do?”

Clara answered without hesitation.

“Tell the truth.”

“About what?”

“Everything you signed. Everything she told you. Every time you ignored me.”

Julian nodded.

“I will.”

Clara looked at him for a long moment.

“That does not mean I’m staying married to you.”

His face tightened.

But he accepted it.

“I know.”

👉 Julian was finally ready to testify—but Eleanor had already begun destroying evidence.
