Chapter 6 - The Woman Outside the Door

The door opened before Eleanor could stop it.
Mara Ellis entered with a hospital security supervisor and Clara’s obstetrician, Dr. Lena Park.
Mara was in her early forties, calm and expressionless.
She held a tablet.
“Clara, are you safe?”
Clara looked at Julian.
He stepped farther away from the bed.
“Yes.”
Dr. Park moved immediately to Clara’s side.
She covered Clara’s legs with a clean sheet and checked the fetal monitor.
The baby’s heartbeat was fast but steady.
Julian watched every movement.
Eleanor lifted her chin.
“This is a family matter.”
Mara looked at her.
“No. It stopped being private when you interfered with a patient’s medical care.”
Dominic spoke.
“You have no evidence of interference.”
Mara tapped the tablet.
“I have forty-three minutes of evidence.”
His face changed.
Eleanor looked toward Clara.
“You planned this.”
Clara met her eyes.
“Yes.”
The answer was quiet.
Powerful.
Julian turned toward his wife.
“How long?”
“Long enough to know your mother had Dominic create a medical narrative before I was ever examined.”
Dominic raised one hand.
“I object to that characterization.”
Mara looked at him.
“You are not in court.”
The security supervisor asked Eleanor and Dominic to leave.
Eleanor refused.
“My son invited us.”
Julian said, “Not anymore.”
She stared at him.
“You would choose her after everything she has done?”
He looked at Clara’s bruises.
“What has she done?”
Eleanor’s lips parted.
No answer came.
Mara handed the tablet to Julian.
The screen showed an audio timeline.
No text was readable from across the room, but the timestamps were clear.
“Before you arrived,” Mara said, “your mother discussed removing Clara from the hospital before delivery.”
Julian looked at Eleanor.
“Where were you taking her?”
“A treatment center.”
“What center?”
Dominic lowered his eyes.
Mara answered.
“A private psychiatric facility in Connecticut.”
Clara’s breathing became uneven.
Julian looked sick.
“She is nine months pregnant.”
Eleanor snapped, “The baby would have been delivered safely.”
“Without her consent?”
Silence.
Mara turned to the security officer.
“Please escort them out.”
Eleanor looked at Clara one last time.
“This is not over.”
Clara’s hand tightened over her belly.
May you like
“No,” she said. “It is finally starting.”
👉 Eleanor was removed from the hospital—but the documents she left behind revealed a betrayal even Julian had not expected.
