Chapter 7 - Julian’s Signature

After Eleanor and Dominic were escorted away, Dr. Park gave Clara a mild sedative and ordered complete quiet.
Julian remained near the window.
He did not approach the bed.
He had finally understood that his presence might not comfort her.
Mara opened Dominic’s abandoned portfolio.
Inside were copies of the custody petition, psychiatric affidavit, trust documents, and transfer authorization.
Then she found a page bearing Julian’s signature.
Clara saw it from the bed.
Her face changed.
Julian noticed.
“What is it?”
Mara handed him the paper.
His name appeared at the bottom.
Consent for temporary medical decision-making authority.
He stared at it.
“I signed this last week.”
Clara’s voice was barely audible.
“You signed away my medical rights?”
“No. My mother said it allowed her to speak to doctors if you became unconscious.”
Mara shook her head.
“It authorizes Eleanor to make decisions based on a declaration of incapacity.”
Julian’s throat tightened.
“I didn’t read it.”
Clara looked away.
That answer was worse.
He moved one step closer.
“Clara—”
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
“You signed whatever she placed in front of you.”
“I trusted her.”
“And you didn’t trust me.”
Julian had no defense.
Mara continued searching.
She found another document.
A petition naming Eleanor as guardian of the unborn child’s trust.
Julian’s signature appeared there too.
Clara closed her eyes.
“You gave her control of our daughter’s inheritance.”
“I didn’t know.”
“You didn’t ask.”
The room became silent except for the fetal monitor.
Julian sank into a chair near the window.
For the first time, he looked smaller than the people he had spent his life obeying.
Mara examined the signature dates.
“Some of these may have been obtained through misrepresentation.”
Clara opened her eyes.
“He still signed them.”
Julian nodded slowly.
“She is right.”
He looked at Clara.
“I failed you.”
No excuses.
No demand for forgiveness.
Just the truth.
Clara’s eyes filled, but her voice remained steady.
“You did more than fail me.”
Julian stared at the floor.
“I know.”
Mara removed one final sealed envelope.
It was addressed to Clara.
Inside was a report from the Vance family doctor.
The report claimed Clara had admitted to violent thoughts toward her unborn baby.
Clara had never spoken to that doctor.
Julian recognized the signature.
May you like
His uncle had signed it.
👉 The custody plan was no longer the work of one controlling mother—it was a coordinated family conspiracy.
