Chapter 9 - The Penthouse Fire
At 4:12 that afternoon, smoke poured from a storage room inside the Vance penthouse.
The fire was contained quickly.
No one was injured.
But several boxes of financial records were destroyed.
So was the home server.
Eleanor called it an electrical accident.
Mara did not believe her.
Neither did the fire marshal.
Security footage showed Dominic entering the storage room twenty minutes before the alarm.
He carried the leather portfolio.
He left without it.
The evidence in Clara’s hospital room suddenly became even more important.
Mara had already copied every document.
The hidden camera had captured Dominic discussing the custody strategy.
The audio included Eleanor ordering him to “clean the history” before Clara’s hearing.
Julian gave police full access to his email, phone, and financial records.
The results shocked him.
For years, his mother had used his accounts to pay private investigators, doctors, and consultants.
She had built psychological profiles on every woman Julian dated.
Clara’s file was the largest.
It included photographs, medical appointments, private conversations, and notes from household staff.
Eleanor had not begun controlling Clara during the pregnancy.
She had begun before the wedding.
Mara found an email from Eleanor to Dominic written three days after Julian proposed.
The Carter family trust may become accessible through marriage. We need safeguards.
Julian read the sentence twice.
“My mother approved the marriage because of Clara’s family money.”
Clara’s expression did not change.
“I suspected that.”
“You knew?”
“I knew she never loved me.”
Julian sat beside the window.
“I thought she wanted me to be happy.”
Clara looked at him.
“She wanted you obedient.”
That truth hurt him more than anger could have.
Police obtained a warrant for the penthouse.
Eleanor was questioned.
Dominic claimed attorney-client privilege.
Then investigators found the remains of a burned notebook in the storage room.
Only one page survived.
On it was a handwritten payment schedule to the physician who had declared Clara unstable.
