Chapter 10 - The Attorney’s Insurance Policy

Dominic had worked for the Vance family for thirty-two years.
He knew their secrets.
He also knew Eleanor would sacrifice him to protect herself.
After the penthouse fire, he disappeared.
His apartment was empty.
His office computers had been wiped.
Police issued a warrant.
Three days later, Mara received an encrypted email.
It contained an address and one sentence.
Bring immunity papers.
Dominic was hiding in a motel near Albany.
He agreed to speak with federal investigators.
But only if he received protection.
Eleanor had ordered him to create the custody case.
She wanted Clara declared incompetent before delivery.
Once Eleanor became guardian, she planned to move the trust assets into Vance-controlled investments.
Dominic admitted the psychiatric evidence was fabricated.
He admitted paying the physician.
He admitted directing staff members to exaggerate incidents.
He admitted destroying documents.
Then he revealed his insurance policy.
For years, he had recorded Eleanor’s instructions.
One recording was made two weeks before Clara entered the hospital.
Eleanor’s voice was clear.
“If Clara will not cooperate, we remove her before the child is born.”
Dominic asked, “And Julian?”
“He will sign whatever I tell him to sign.”
“What if he learns the truth?”
“He never asks questions.”
Julian heard the recording in a prosecutor’s office.
He did not react at first.
Then his hands began shaking.
His entire life had been reduced to one sentence.
He never asks questions.
Clara sat across the room.
She watched him absorb it.
He looked at her.
“She knew exactly how to use me.”
Clara answered quietly.
“You allowed her to.”
He nodded.
“I did.”
Dominic also surrendered financial records proving Eleanor had spent more than two million dollars building the case against Clara.
The funds came from Julian’s company.
That meant Julian faced potential civil liability.
He did not fight it.
“Freeze everything,” he told investigators.
“My salary. My accounts. My shares.”
His attorney objected.
Julian ignored him.
“Use whatever is mine to repay Clara’s trust.”
Clara looked at him.
It did not repair the marriage.

But it was the first decision he made without protecting himself.
👉 Dominic had turned against Eleanor—but the stress of the investigation pushed Clara into labor weeks early.
