Chapter 4 - What the Bruises Said

Julian had seen Clara bruised before.
A mark on her wrist.
A shadow near her hip.
A faint discoloration beneath the sleeve of her robe.
Every time he asked, she gave him an explanation.
She had bumped into a table.
She had slipped in the bathroom.
She had walked into a cabinet door.
Julian accepted each excuse because the alternative was unthinkable.
Now the alternative covered both her legs.
He stared at the dark marks.
“How did this happen?”
Clara looked at Eleanor.
Eleanor answered for her.
“She did it to herself.”
Julian’s head turned slowly.
“What?”
“She has been creating evidence.”
Dominic nodded.
“Self-inflicted injury is consistent with attention-seeking behavior.”
Clara’s eyes filled.
“You wrote that before a doctor even examined me.”
Dominic said nothing.
Julian looked at the papers.
The psychiatric evaluation was dated the previous day.
Before Clara had entered the hospital.
Before anyone had seen the bruises.
His voice dropped.
“How was this prepared already?”
Dominic tightened his grip on the portfolio.
“It was a preliminary draft.”
“Based on what?”
“Family observations.”
Julian faced his mother.
“What observations?”
Eleanor’s expression remained composed.
“Months of irrational behavior.”
Clara spoke quietly.
“She means months of refusing to give her access to my trust.”
Julian frowned.
“What trust?”
Eleanor looked at Clara with hatred.
Clara continued.
“My grandfather left money for our daughter.”
Julian had never heard about it.
“How much?”
Clara closed her eyes.
“Twenty-eight million dollars.”
The room went still.
Julian looked at his mother.
Eleanor said, “That money should be administered responsibly.”
“By you?”
“By the family.”
Clara shook her head.
“By me, until our daughter turns twenty-five.”
Julian finally understood why the custody documents had been prepared before the baby was born.
If Clara were declared unstable, another guardian could control the trust.
His mother.
He looked toward the bruises again.
“What did they do to you?”
Clara did not answer immediately.
She looked toward the ceiling.
Then toward the dark phone beside her hip.
May you like
“They told me no one would believe me.”
👉 Julian had finally found the motive—but Clara still had to prove who caused the bruises.
