Chapter 2 - The Papers on the Bed

Two hours earlier, Clara had awakened to find divorce papers resting near her feet.

She had been admitted to the hospital after collapsing in the lobby of her apartment building.

Her blood pressure was dangerously high.

Her doctor had ordered complete rest.

Instead, Eleanor arrived with Dominic.

No flowers.

No concern.

Only documents.

Eleanor placed the stack on the bed.

“You will sign these before Julian gets here.”

Clara stared at the first page.

The text blurred through her tears, but she recognized the headings.

Divorce.

Temporary custody.

Psychiatric evaluation.

Voluntary surrender of parental decision-making.

Her heart began pounding.

“I’m not signing anything.”

Eleanor smiled.

“You’re confused.”

“I know exactly what this is.”

“You attacked me yesterday.”

Clara’s eyes widened.

Eleanor had grabbed her in the Vance penthouse.

Clara had tried to pull away.

Dominic opened the portfolio.

“We have witness statements.”

“From whom?”

“Household staff.”

Clara looked at him.

The staff worked for Eleanor.

Some had been with the Vance family for decades.

“You want to take my daughter.”

Eleanor leaned closer.

“We want to protect her.”

“From me?”

“From instability.”

Clara glanced toward her phone beside her hip.

Its screen was dark.

Eleanor did not know it was recording.

Dominic placed a pen on the papers.

“Sign, and this can remain private.”

“What happens if I refuse?”

Eleanor’s expression became colder.

“We file before the baby is born.”

“You can’t.”

Dominic adjusted his tie.

“With the right medical evidence, we can.”

Clara looked toward the door.

“Where is Julian?”

Eleanor’s smile returned.

“On his way.”

Clara felt a flicker of hope.

Then Eleanor said, “He already agrees with us.”

The hope disappeared.

Clara reached for the call button.

Eleanor noticed and covered it with the blanket.

“No interruptions until this is settled.”

She had no idea the hidden lens above the bed was already watching.

👉 Clara had expected Eleanor to threaten her—but she had not expected Julian to walk in believing every lie.
