Chapter 5 - The Camera Above the Bed

The tiny lens in the ventilation grate was not part of the hospital’s standard security system.
Clara knew that.
She had arranged it herself.
Three weeks earlier, she contacted a private investigator named Mara Ellis.
Clara had once worked in compliance for a financial firm.
She understood patterns.
Accounts.
Paper trails.
Quiet theft disguised as administrative work.
After her grandfather died, Clara became trustee of the unborn child’s inheritance.
That was when Eleanor’s behavior changed.
She began asking questions about guardianship.
About Clara’s medical history.
About whether pregnancy had made her anxious.
Then household employees began documenting every disagreement.
A housekeeper claimed Clara screamed.
A driver claimed she became disoriented.
A private physician recommended a psychiatric evaluation after meeting her for twelve minutes.
Clara knew a case was being built.
Mara agreed.
“Do not confront them,” the investigator warned.
“Then what do I do?”
“Collect evidence they cannot control.”
Mara installed discreet recording devices in Clara’s apartment, car, and personal belongings.
But the hospital room was different.
Clara could not predict whether Eleanor would follow her there.
So Mara arranged a temporary lens through a trusted security contractor before Clara’s scheduled admission.
The camera transmitted to an encrypted server.
It also sent an alert if Clara pressed the call button three times.
The red reflection on her phone confirmed the upload.
Now, in the hospital suite, Eleanor stared at the vent.
“You recorded us without permission.”
Clara’s voice remained weak.
“This is my private room.”
Dominic stepped forward.
“Any recording may be inadmissible.”
Julian looked at him.
“You were threatening my wife.”
“I was advising her.”
“You prepared custody papers before she was evaluated.”
Dominic’s professional mask began to crack.
Eleanor pointed at Clara.
“She is manipulating you.”
Julian moved between them.
“No.”
The single word stopped her.
For the first time in his life, he had placed himself between his mother and someone she wanted to control.
Clara watched him carefully.
She did not trust him yet.
Then three firm knocks sounded from the closed hospital door.
Dominic looked toward Eleanor.
Clara looked at the phone.

The alert had been received.
👉 The person outside the room had been listening in real time—and Eleanor knew exactly who it might be.
