Chapter 12 - The Creditor Behind the Loans
Brooke’s companies were not funded only through Hawthorne.
A private creditor named Victor Dane had advanced her money before Richard arranged the internal loans.
Dane specialized in lending to desperate business owners at illegal interest rates.
He expected repayment through the inheritance scheme.
When Brooke failed to produce the money, his people began threatening her.
That was why she needed Claire’s bank card by Friday.
Arthur knew about Dane.
He believed access to Claire’s inherited accounts would solve everything.
Instead, the assault triggered account freezes across the network.
Dane responded by sending Arthur a message.
PAY OR I SEND CLAIRE THE FILES.
Arthur forwarded the threat to Richard.
Richard answered:
SHE ALREADY KNOWS TOO MUCH.
Dane possessed copies of their communications, forged documents, and transfer instructions.
He had been blackmailing them for months.
Claire asked why Brooke had not gone to police.
Brooke stared through the interview-room glass.
“Because then Claire would know.”
Even after threats, fraud, and violence, shame mattered more to her than honesty.
Federal investigators located Dane and seized his records.
The files confirmed Arthur designed the plan to pressure Claire.
He wrote that she would never involve police because she feared public scandal.
He described her as “emotionally predictable.”
His plan included three stages.
First, demand the inheritance.
Second, threaten divorce.
Third, if Claire resisted, use the forged postnuptial agreement and claim she had voluntarily transferred control.
The coffee assault was not written into the plan.
It was Arthur losing control when the person he considered predictable finally refused to move.
Claire read his messages without crying.
He had studied her kindness as though it were a weakness in a contract.
Daniel asked whether she wanted to step away from the investigation.
“No.”
“You do not have to review everything personally.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Why?”
“Because for years, other people decided which truth I was strong enough to hear.”
She looked at Evelyn’s empty chair in the boardroom.
“That ends now.”
The evidence against Arthur grew.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Elder exploitation.
Domestic assault.
Obstruction.

But Arthur still believed he had one defense.
