Chapter 8 - Evelyn’s Final Voice Message
The archived message had been saved automatically by Evelyn’s home phone system.
Brooke’s voice was sharp and impatient.
“You cannot freeze the accounts now. Arthur promised this would be approved.”
Evelyn answered calmly.
“Arthur has no authority here.”
“You gave Claire everything.”
“I protected what belongs to her.”
“She is married to my brother.”
“That does not make him an owner.”
Brooke’s voice changed.
“If you expose this, Claire will lose her marriage.”
Evelyn paused.
“Then perhaps she never had one.”
Claire closed her eyes.
The message continued.
Evelyn told Brooke the loans would be audited and Richard would be removed.
Brooke threatened to tell Claire that Evelyn had manipulated the inheritance to destroy Arthur.
Evelyn replied:
