Chapter 6 - Evelyn’s Locked Office
Aunt Evelyn worked from a private library inside her country home.
The room contained loan ledgers, trust documents, and personal correspondence.
Only three people had regular access.
Evelyn.
Richard Vale.
And Claire.
During Evelyn’s final month, Claire spent most days at the hospital.
Arthur volunteered to check the house.
He said he watered plants and collected mail.
Security logs told a different story.
Arthur entered the library eleven times.
On four occasions, Richard Vale arrived within twenty minutes.
They remained inside for hours.
Claire felt physically ill reading the records.
Evelyn had trusted Richard.
Claire had trusted Arthur.
The two men used her grief as cover.
Lena recovered deleted calendar entries from Richard’s company account.
One meeting was titled:
MERIDIAN COLLATERAL STRATEGY.
Another:
SUCCESSION BEFORE CLAIRE.
Claire asked, “Before me what?”
Daniel answered, “Before you took ownership.”
Evelyn apparently discovered irregularities shortly before her death.
She amended her will, accelerated Claire’s succession, and ordered a private audit.
But the audit file was missing.
Richard claimed Evelyn canceled it because of her health.
Claire did not believe him.
A housekeeper remembered Evelyn arguing with Arthur in the library.
She heard Evelyn say:
“You will not use Claire as your escape.”
Arthur left carrying a leather folder.
Two days later, Evelyn was hospitalized for the final time.
Claire had assumed the argument concerned her marriage.
Now she believed Evelyn had discovered the fraud.
Daniel located a sealed letter Evelyn sent to an outside attorney.
The envelope had never been delivered because the courier address was altered in Hawthorne’s system.
The original letter remained in a secure outgoing-mail archive.
Inside, Evelyn wrote that Richard and Arthur were manipulating internal loans through Brooke’s companies.
She instructed the attorney to remove Richard and notify Claire.
The letter ended with one sentence.
I fear Claire will protect her husband until he gives her no choice.
Claire read it twice.
Evelyn had seen the truth before she did.
Not because Claire was foolish.
Because Arthur behaved differently when no one was watching.
The coffee assault was the first time his private cruelty produced evidence he could not explain away.
Lena interrupted.
“We found the missing audit.”
“Where?”
“Inside a medical expense folder.”
The file contained more than financial theft.
It documented payments to a private clinic during Evelyn’s final illness.
