Chapter 14 - The Husband Who Still Thought He Owned Her

Arthur sat behind thick glass in the detention center.
He looked tired but not remorseful.
Claire picked up the phone.
His eyes moved immediately to her cheek.
The redness had faded.
“You look fine,” he said.
Claire understood the purpose.
If she looked healed, he could pretend the assault was insignificant.
“I am healing.”
Arthur leaned closer.
“Richard manipulated everything.”
“You met him in Evelyn’s office eleven times.”
“He said the loans were legal.”
“You forged my signature.”
“Brooke handled those documents.”
“You pledged my house.”
“I was trying to save the family.”
“Which family?”
His jaw tightened.
“You enjoyed watching me struggle.”
Claire almost laughed.
“You lived in a house you did not pay for, used my aunt’s company, stole millions, and maintained another apartment.”
“You made me feel powerless.”
“No. You were angry that my love did not make you an owner.”
Arthur lowered his voice.
“I can return money you haven’t found.”
“The Cayman account?”
His expression froze.
Claire continued.
“The one Richard opened through Dane’s shell company. The balance was frozen yesterday.”
Arthur stared at her.
That account was his final leverage.
It contained nearly four million dollars.
“How did you find it?”
“You kept believing I was only Evelyn’s niece.”
Claire leaned closer to the glass.
“I am now the majority owner of the company that financed the shell structure. Every hidden road eventually returned to my books.”
Arthur’s confidence disappeared.
“What do you want from me?”
“The truth.”
“I loved you.”
“No.”
“I did, in my way.”
“Your way required me to remain useful and uninformed.”
Arthur’s face hardened.
“You think you’re better than me because you inherited power.”
Claire’s voice remained calm.
“I think I am different because when I received power, I used it to expose theft instead of commit it.”
She placed a copy of the divorce petition against the glass.
Arthur looked at it.
“You cannot erase ten years.”
“I don’t need to. I only need to stop giving them the meaning you chose.”
Arthur’s hand lifted toward the glass.
“Claire.”
She stood.
For the first time, he sounded frightened.
“If I testify against Richard, will you help me?”
Claire looked back once.
“No.”

Then she left him with the consequences he had designed for everyone else.
👉 Arthur finally understood Claire would not rescue him—but Brooke still possessed one piece of evidence that could determine who received the longest sentence.
