Chapter 3 - What Brooke Said Before the Assault

Claire listened to the audio from inside the car Daniel sent.
The recording began twenty-three minutes before the coffee was thrown.
At first, it contained the ordinary sounds of breakfast.
Silverware.
The refrigerator door.
Arthur pouring coffee.
Then Brooke’s voice became clear.
“If the payment isn’t made by Friday, they’ll look at the old transfers.”
Claire replayed the line.
Arthur answered, “They won’t if Claire gives you the card.”
“What old transfers?” Claire had asked.
Brooke laughed.
“Nothing that concerns you.”
Arthur interrupted.
“Drop it.”
At the time, Claire assumed they were hiding unpaid debts.
Now she heard fear beneath Arthur’s words.
The recording continued.
Brooke mentioned a lender named Northbridge Capital.
Claire knew the name immediately.
Northbridge was not an independent lender.
It was a distressed-debt subsidiary owned through Hawthorne.
Evelyn had created it to investigate suspicious private loans and recover funds hidden through shell companies.
Brooke had borrowed money from Claire’s inheritance without knowing Claire now controlled the lender.
Claire called Daniel again.
“Search Northbridge for Brooke Hale.”
He went silent while accessing the system.
“There are three loans connected to a company called Hale Meridian Interiors.”
“How much?”
“Two point four million dollars.”
Claire gripped the phone.
Brooke’s failed boutique had never been worth even a fraction of that.
“Who guaranteed them?”
Daniel paused.
“Arthur.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Arthur had no assets large enough to secure the loans.
“Using what collateral?”
“The Greenwich residence.”
Claire looked toward the home disappearing behind the car.
“That house is not his.”
“No,” Daniel said. “It is titled to the Claire Evelyn Mercer Trust.”
Arthur had pledged her house as collateral.
He could not legally do that without authority.
Daniel continued.
“There is a spousal consent form attached.”
Claire’s voice became quiet.
“Whose signature?”
“Yours.”
The signature was forged.
Claire had never seen the loan documents.
Arthur had not thrown coffee because Brooke wanted spending money.
He had thrown it because the lender was about to discover that he had stolen against Claire’s property.
The inheritance transfer had placed the evidence directly under her control.
Daniel spoke again.
“There is another issue.”
“What?”
“The loans were approved using internal authorization from Hawthorne.”
Claire sat straighter.
