Chapter 9 - The Drive in Brooke’s Fireplace
Police reached Brooke’s home before midnight.
Smoke was coming from the chimney.
Inside the fireplace, officers found pieces of a damaged external drive.
Brooke stood in the kitchen wearing gloves.
She claimed she had been burning old business equipment.
The surveillance footage showed Arthur handing her the drive hours earlier.
Forensic technicians believed much of the data could still be recovered.
Brooke was arrested for evidence destruction and obstruction.
Arthur’s attorney called Claire immediately.
He offered a private settlement.
Arthur would agree to divorce, leave the house permanently, and repay part of the money if Claire withdrew support for criminal charges.
Claire listened without interrupting.
Then she asked, “How would Arthur repay six million dollars?”
The attorney hesitated.
“He has assets.”
“Hidden where?”
“I am not authorized to discuss that.”
“Then you are not offering repayment. You are offering another lie.”
She ended the call.
Arthur appeared at Claire’s office building the next morning despite the protective order.
Security stopped him in the lobby.
He shouted that Claire was stealing his life.
Claire watched through the upstairs security feed.
For years, Arthur’s greatest weapon had been privacy.
He behaved cruelly behind closed doors and charmingly in public.
Now cameras captured everything.
He pointed at the guards.
“My wife owns this building.”
One guard answered, “That is why you are not permitted upstairs.”
Arthur froze.
He had assumed Hawthorne rented its headquarters.
The building belonged to Claire’s trust.
So did several properties he had used to impress clients.
He had built his social identity around assets controlled by the woman he called weak.
Police arrived and removed him for violating the order.
While Arthur was being processed, forensic analysts recovered the first files from Brooke’s damaged drive.
There were spreadsheets.
Loan approvals.
Copies of Claire’s forged signature.
And photographs of Evelyn’s confidential estate documents.
One folder was titled:
AFTER E.
Inside was a plan to transfer Claire’s inherited voting shares to Arthur through a postnuptial agreement.
Claire remembered signing a marriage insurance document six months earlier.
Arthur said it protected both of them from business liabilities.
She had not read every page.
A replacement page had been inserted afterward.
