Chapter 4 - The Medical Photographs

At the urgent-care clinic, a physician examined Claire’s face and neck.

The coffee caused superficial burns and redness but no permanent damage.

Photographs were taken from several angles.

The stained blazer and blouse were placed into evidence bags.

Claire gave the police the audio recording.

Arthur called seventeen times.

She did not answer.

Then the messages began.

You embarrassed me.

Brooke was desperate.

It was an accident.

You moved when I threw the mug away.

By the fifth message, his story had already changed three times.

Claire forwarded every message to Daniel and the detective assigned to the complaint.

The physician asked whether this was the first physical incident.

Claire started to say yes.

Then memories surfaced.

Arthur gripping her arm hard enough to bruise.

Blocking the bedroom door during arguments.

Driving dangerously when she refused to give him money.

Throwing her laptop against a wall.

None of those had felt like “real violence” at the time.

Arthur always apologized before Claire could fully name what happened.

She corrected herself.

“It’s the first time he used something hot.”

The doctor’s expression remained gentle.

“That is not the same as the first time he harmed you.”

Claire looked away.

The truth was humiliating.

Not because she was weak.

Because she had spent years defending a man who carefully taught her to doubt her own fear.

Daniel arrived with Claire’s attorney and a private forensic accountant named Lena Ortiz.

Lena placed a tablet on the table.

“We found twelve transfers between Brooke’s companies and accounts associated with Arthur.”

“How much?”

“Just over six million dollars across three years.”

Claire stared at her.

Arthur earned a respectable salary as a commercial property consultant.

He had no legitimate access to six million dollars.

“Where did it come from?”

“Several private lending funds previously controlled by your aunt.”

Claire remembered Arthur volunteering to “help” Evelyn organize property documents during her final illness.

At the time, Claire believed he was being kind.

Now she understood he had been searching.

“What did he steal from her?” Claire asked.

Lena’s answer was careful.

“We don’t know yet.”

Daniel turned the tablet toward Claire.

One transfer had been authorized by Hawthorne’s chief operating officer.

Richard Vale.

Evelyn’s most trusted executive.
