Chapter 7 - The Clinic Brooke Never Ran

Brooke had opened Meridian Wellness two years earlier.

She advertised private recovery programs, vitamin therapy, and luxury home care.

The business closed after nine months.

At least, that was what Claire believed.

Corporate records showed the company remained active.

It billed Hawthorne for “executive health services” provided to Evelyn.

The invoices totaled eight hundred thousand dollars.

Evelyn never visited the clinic.

Her real doctors had no record of approving the treatments listed.

Lena found payments for medication management, private nursing, and experimental therapy.

None occurred.

The money flowed from Hawthorne to Brooke’s company.

Then into accounts shared with Arthur and Richard.

Claire pressed both hands against the conference table.

“They stole while she was dying.”

Daniel’s voice was grim.

“Yes.”

There was more.

One invoice claimed Brooke provided daily in-home medication supervision.

Claire had been at Evelyn’s house during many of those dates.

No nurse ever came.

Arthur occasionally offered to organize Evelyn’s pills.

Claire had thought he was helping.

“Did he change her medication?” she asked.

No one answered immediately.

The silence terrified her.

Daniel said, “We have no evidence of that.”

“Yet.”

The clinic’s billing records included medical codes copied from Evelyn’s real files.

Someone had access to her private medical information.

Richard sat on the board of the hospital where Evelyn received treatment.

Brooke’s former boyfriend worked in medical records.

The scheme reached beyond fraudulent loans.

It involved identity theft, false medical billing, and possible interference with Evelyn’s care.

Claire called the detective.

The case moved from domestic assault and financial fraud into a wider criminal investigation.

Arthur sent another message.

I know you’re emotional, but do not accuse Brooke of hurting Evelyn.

Claire had not told him what investigators found.

She stared at the screen.

Only Daniel, Lena, and the police knew about the medical invoices.

Arthur’s warning revealed that he already knew what they contained.

She replied with one sentence.

Why would I accuse her?

Arthur did not answer.

Ten minutes later, Brooke called Claire.

Claire let the recording system capture it.

Brooke was crying.

“Arthur made me submit those invoices.”

“Which invoices?”

A long silence followed.

Brooke realized her mistake.

Then she whispered, “He said Evelyn would never know.”

👉 Brooke blamed Arthur—but an archived voice message proved she had threatened Evelyn when the older woman refused to approve another payment.
