Chapter 12 - Evelyn’s Threat
Abigail received the message from an unknown number.
Drop the charges, or Hunter learns the truth about his father.
She showed it to Detective Cole.
He traced the number to a prepaid phone purchased near Bertha’s salon.
The threat was not random.
Evelyn had mentioned Daniel several times during arguments.
She always implied that Abigail did not know everything about her late husband.
Abigail had ignored it.
Now she opened the sealed box of Daniel’s belongings she had avoided for four years.
Inside were work documents.
Letters.
A damaged watch.
And an envelope addressed to Abigail in Evelyn’s handwriting.
The envelope was empty.
Cole searched Evelyn’s financial files.
He found a payment made three weeks after Daniel’s death.
The recipient was a private investigator.
Abigail’s stomach turned.
“What was she investigating?”
The report was recovered from an old email account.
Daniel had suspected Evelyn was misusing money from Abigail’s father’s estate years earlier.
He collected documents.
He planned to confront her.
The day before his fatal construction accident, he emailed a copy to himself.
The attached files later disappeared.
Evelyn had access to Abigail’s computer during the funeral.
There was no evidence she caused Daniel’s death.
But she had used his death to destroy the investigation.
