Chapter 9 - The Photograph Under the Mattress

Detective Cole searched Evelyn’s home again.
This time, he focused on Hunter’s guest room.
Beneath the mattress, he found a photograph.
It showed Hunter standing near the kitchen table.
Behind him, several bank statements were spread across the surface.
A date was printed in the corner.
The photograph had been taken by an automatic security camera.
Evelyn told police the camera system had stopped working months earlier.
That was another lie.
Cole recovered cloud backups.
The videos showed Hunter entering the kitchen for water.
He looked at the papers.
He traced Abigail’s name with one finger.
Then Evelyn walked in.
There was no audio.
But her reaction was clear.
She grabbed his arm.
Pulled him away from the table.
Pointed toward the backyard.
Bertha arrived twenty minutes later.
Together, they walked Hunter toward the shed.
The following morning, Evelyn deleted the clip from the local system.
She did not know the cloud service preserved removed footage for thirty days.
The image beneath the mattress was a printed still from that recording.
Hunter had hidden it.
Abigail watched the footage once.
Then turned away.
“I left him there after that.”
“You didn’t know,” Cole said.
“I should have.”
“You were deceived.”
“I still left him.”
Cole did not offer false comfort.
Instead, he said, “What matters now is what you do with the truth.”
Abigail looked through the glass.
Hunter was drawing with Nurse Ramirez.
His hand moved carefully because of the wrapped wrist.
She made a decision.
She would never allow guilt to become another reason for silence.
She authorized Cole to collect every medical record.
Every message.
Every bank statement.
Every photograph.
Evelyn had depended on Abigail feeling too ashamed to expose what happened.
