Chapter 4 - The Missing Backpack

The next morning, Abigail returned to Evelyn’s house with Detective Cole.

The backyard shed had been sealed.

Yellow evidence tape stretched across the door.

Abigail stood near the patio, staring at the dirt where paramedics had found her son.

Cole entered the main house with a warrant.

Hunter’s overnight backpack was missing.

Abigail had packed it herself.

Blue pajamas.

A toothbrush.

His inhaler.

A small stuffed fox.

None of those items were in the guest room.

Evelyn claimed Abigail had never brought a bag.

Abigail opened her phone.

She showed Cole a photograph taken before work.

Hunter stood beside the front door wearing the backpack and smiling.

The time stamp was 3:42 p.m.

Cole searched the garage.

Nothing.

Then he opened an outdoor trash bin.

Near the bottom was the backpack.

Its straps had been cut.

The stuffed fox was gone.

Hunter’s inhaler was still inside.

Unused.

Abigail covered her mouth.

“He needed that.”

Cole placed the bag into evidence.

Inside a side pocket, he found a folded sheet from Hunter’s school.

It was a drawing assignment titled:

People Who Make Me Feel Safe.

Hunter had drawn Abigail.

Nurse Ramirez.

A crossing guard.

And his grandfather, who had died two years earlier.

Evelyn was not in the picture.

Neither was Bertha.

On the back, written in crayon, was one sentence:

Grandma says boys who cry need the dark room.

Abigail’s knees nearly gave out.

“What dark room?”

Cole looked toward the backyard.

The shed’s narrow window had been covered from the inside with cardboard.

Not recently.

The tape was old.

Whatever had happened to Hunter was not the first incident.

👉 Hunter’s school drawing revealed that the shed was not an accident—it had been used before as punishment.
