Chapter 15 - Hunter’s Choice

Hunter did not enter a courtroom.

The judge met him in a child-friendly interview room.

His therapist remained nearby.

A camera recorded the conversation.

Abigail watched from another room with her attorney.

Hunter held the stuffed fox, carefully repaired by the hospital’s child-life specialist.

The judge asked simple questions.

Where he lived.

Who made him feel safe.

What happened at Grandma’s house.

Hunter stared at the toy.

“Do I have to tell everything?”

“No,” the judge said. “Only what you choose.”

“Will Grandma hear?”

“Not right now.”

He took a slow breath.

“She puts me in the shed when I make her mad.”

“What makes her mad?”

“When I ask about papers.”

“What papers?”

“Mom’s name was on them.”

“Did anyone else put you in the shed?”

“Aunt Bertha helped.”

“What did they tell you?”

“That Mom would lose everything if I talked.”

The judge paused.

“What do you want to happen now?”

Hunter looked toward the camera.

Abigail felt as though he could see her.

“I want to live with Mom.”

“You already do.”

“I want Grandma to stop saying Mom needs her.”

The judge waited.

Hunter added, “Mom needs me. And I need her.”

Abigail broke down silently.

The interview ended after eleven minutes.

The judge denied Evelyn’s custody petition immediately.

A protective order barred Evelyn and Bertha from contacting Hunter.

Abigail retained full custody.

The court appointed an independent manager for Hunter’s recovered funds.

But the criminal proceedings remained ahead.

Evelyn was still free pending the next hearing.

As she left the courthouse, she stared directly at Abigail.

“You think you won?”

Abigail stepped between her and Hunter.

“No.”

Her voice was calm.

“My son survived you. That is not the same as winning.”

👉 The custody battle was over—but Evelyn still believed the family would protect her when the criminal evidence became public.
