Chapter 6 - The Voice Inside the Fox

The recorder was old.

A small digital model usually used for lectures or interviews.

Its battery was nearly dead.

Detective Cole sent it to the department’s forensic lab.

Abigail waited two days for the results.

Hunter improved slowly.

The swelling around his face decreased.

His wrist was not broken, but the tissue was badly strained.

Doctors found dehydration, exhaustion, and several bruises in different stages of healing.

Some were older than the shed incident.

When Cole returned, he closed the ICU door.

“The device contains multiple files.”

Abigail gripped the chair.

“How many?”

“Fourteen.”

She stopped breathing.

The earliest recording was dated three months earlier.

Cole explained that the device activated automatically when voices rose above a certain level.

Someone had placed it inside the toy deliberately.

“Who?”

“We don’t know.”

He played only ten seconds.

Evelyn’s voice came first.

“Stop crying before your mother gets home.”

Then Bertha.

“Put him in the shed. He’ll learn.”

Hunter’s frightened voice followed.

“I’m sorry.”

Abigail pressed both hands against her mouth.

Cole stopped the audio.

“There’s more.”

“How much more?”

“Enough to establish a pattern.”

“Why was the recorder in his toy?”

Cole had a theory.

A former babysitter may have suspected something.

Or someone in the family had attempted to preserve evidence.

Hunter opened his eyes.

He had heard part of the recording.

“That’s Grandpa’s fox,” he whispered.

Abigail looked at him.

The stuffed animal had belonged to Abigail’s father before he died.

He had given it to Hunter during his final hospital stay.

“Who put the little machine inside?” Cole asked gently.

Hunter frowned.

“Grandpa did.”

Abigail stared at him.

Her father had suffered from memory loss near the end of his life.

He sometimes recorded reminders.

Perhaps the device had been left there accidentally.

But Detective Cole examined the file dates.

The recordings began after Abigail’s father died.
