Chapter 3 - The Story That Changed Three Times
At the hospital, Evelyn told the first officer that Hunter had wandered into the shed while playing.
Ten minutes later, she said he must have followed the family dog.
An hour after that, she claimed Bertha had placed garden tools inside and forgotten to close the door.
Detective Cole listened without interrupting.
Bertha’s account changed too.
At first, she said she had arrived after the ambulance.
Then a neighbor reported seeing her car in Evelyn’s driveway before sunset.
Bertha corrected herself.
She had stopped by briefly.
Only to bring groceries.
Detective Cole asked why her fingerprints were on the shed’s outer latch.
Bertha stared at him.
“I probably touched it another day.”
“What day?”
“I don’t remember.”
Evelyn began crying again.
“My grandson is hurt, and you’re interrogating us.”
Cole looked toward the ICU doors.
“A six-year-old child was found locked inside an unventilated structure. I’m establishing how.”
Abigail sat nearby, shaking.
She had trusted her mother.
Evelyn watched Hunter twice a week while Abigail worked.
She complained that he was energetic.
Sensitive.
Too attached to his mother.
But Abigail never imagined cruelty.
“Was he punished?” Cole asked.
Evelyn’s crying stopped for half a second.
“No.”
“Did he break something?”
“No.”
“Did he argue with either of you?”
“He is six.”
Bertha folded her arms.
“He has tantrums.”
Abigail turned toward her.
“What tantrums?”
Bertha looked away.
Detective Cole noticed.
“So something happened.”
“No,” Evelyn said quickly.
Cole lifted his phone.
“Hunter’s call to his mother was preserved through emergency dispatch.”
Evelyn’s face changed.
Abigail stared at him.
“The whole call?”
“Enough of it.”
Bertha stepped backward.
Evelyn reached for her arm.
The movement was small.
But coordinated.
Detective Cole had seen that kind of silent warning before.
One person was afraid.
