Chapter 14 - The Box Above Hunter’s Closet
Bertha told police about a gray metal box.
Evelyn stored it above Hunter’s closet in Abigail’s apartment.
She placed it there during a visit while Abigail was working.
According to Bertha, it contained documents Evelyn planned to use if Abigail ever challenged her.
Detective Cole obtained a warrant.
The box sat behind winter blankets.
Inside were copies of Abigail’s bills.
Old medical records.
Private messages printed from her email.
Photographs taken without her knowledge.
A key to the apartment.
And a handwritten log.
Evelyn had recorded every time Abigail asked for childcare.
Every late payment.
Every exhausted complaint.
Beside some entries, she wrote words like:
unstable
unfit
dependent
The log had begun shortly after Hunter was born.
Evelyn had not merely helped Abigail.
She had been building a custody case for years.
At the bottom of the box was a sealed envelope marked:
For Hunter when he is old enough.
Inside was a letter.
Evelyn wrote that Abigail was responsible for Daniel’s death because her emotional demands distracted him before the accident.
There was no truth to it.
The letter was designed to turn Hunter against his mother if Abigail ever cut Evelyn off.
Abigail read the first paragraph.
Then stopped.
“She planned to poison him against me forever.”
Her attorney nodded.
The box also contained Daniel’s missing documents.
The records proving Evelyn had misused estate funds years earlier.
This established motive.
Control of Abigail.
Control of Hunter.
Control of every account connected to the family.
Evelyn had created dependency, documented it, and then punished anyone who threatened to leave.
Abigail looked at the evidence spread across the table.
Her mother had spent years convincing her she could not survive alone.
