Chapter 13 - Bertha Breaks First

Bertha stopped answering Evelyn’s calls.

Her salon accounts were frozen.

The police had seized her phone.

Her attorney explained the evidence.

The recordings.

The bank transfers.

The shed latch.

The hospital confrontation.

The security video.

Bertha realized Evelyn could not protect her.

She requested an interview.

Detective Cole sat across from her.

Bertha began with excuses.

Evelyn controlled the money.

Evelyn created the punishments.

Evelyn insisted Hunter was manipulative.

Cole listened.

Then he asked, “Who locked the shed?”

Bertha stared at the table.

“Evelyn.”

“The fingerprints show both of you touched the latch.”

“I tried to open it.”

“The recording captured you threatening him through the door.”

Bertha began crying.

Real tears this time.

“I never meant for him to get that sick.”

“But you left him.”

“I thought Evelyn would let him out.”

“You walked away.”

“She told me he always exaggerated.”

Cole slid a photograph across the table.

Hunter in the hospital bed.

Nasal cannula.

Wrapped wrist.

Bruised face.

Bertha recoiled.

Cole did not soften.

“You reached for his hand when he identified you.”

“I panicked.”

“You reached for the detective’s evidence?”

“No. Evelyn did.”

“You attempted to remove the child’s hand from view.”

Bertha stopped crying.

She understood how it looked.

Because it was exactly what happened.

Cole offered no promises.

But the prosecutor would consider cooperation.

Bertha finally admitted the truth.

Evelyn had used the shed repeatedly.

At first, only for minutes.

Then longer.

Bertha participated because Evelyn paid her debts.

Each time Hunter threatened to tell Abigail something, they frightened him.

The night of the hospitalization, they were desperate to find the photograph.

They left him longer than usual.

Bertha thought Evelyn returned.

Evelyn thought Bertha did.
