Chapter 18 - The Verdict Hunter Did Not Hear

Hunter did not attend the verdict.

Abigail took him to a science museum.

He pressed buttons.

Built a paper rocket.

Asked why astronauts floated.

She wanted the day to contain something other than fear.

Her attorney called at 2:18 p.m.

Guilty.

Child abuse.

Unlawful imprisonment.

Financial exploitation.

Evidence tampering.

Witness intimidation.

Multiple counts.

Abigail sat on a bench while Hunter watched a model planet rotate above them.

She closed her eyes.

The relief did not feel joyful.

It felt like her body finally understanding that the danger had ended.

Bertha was convicted on lesser charges after her cooperation.

She received a reduced sentence but was ordered to repay every dollar traced to her salon and remain permanently barred from contacting Hunter.

Evelyn received twenty-two years.

At sentencing, the judge addressed her directly.

“You did not lose control once. You created a system of fear and used a child’s love for his mother as a weapon.”

Evelyn showed no remorse.

She turned toward Abigail.

“You will need me someday.”

Abigail stood.

“No.”

One word.

Nothing else.

She left the courtroom without looking back.

That evening, Hunter asked whether Grandma was coming home.

“No.”

“Ever?”

“Not while you are a child.”

He thought about it.

“Is she mad?”

“Probably.”

“Are you scared?”

Abigail answered honestly.

“Not anymore.”

Hunter climbed into her lap.

“Me neither.”

That was not entirely true.

He still feared closed doors.

Dark rooms.

Footsteps outside.

But fear no longer controlled the house.

It could be spoken.

Named.

Comforted.

And every time he spoke, someone believed him.

👉 Evelyn had been punished, but Abigail knew justice alone could not give Hunter back the childhood stolen from him.
