Chapter 7 - The Nurse Who Noticed First
Nurse Ramirez asked to speak with Abigail privately.
They stepped into a consultation room.
“I met Hunter before this admission,” she said.
Abigail looked confused.
“When?”
“Two months ago. Urgent care.”
Abigail remembered.
Evelyn had called and said Hunter tripped while running through the house.
She took him to the clinic because Abigail was working.
Ramirez had been the attending nurse.
“He had bruising around his upper arm,” she said. “The explanation did not fit the pattern.”
“Why didn’t anyone call me?”
“We did.”
Abigail shook her head.
“No.”
“The number in his chart belonged to Evelyn.”
Abigail went cold.
Evelyn had changed the contact information.
“She told us she was his legal guardian.”
Ramirez opened a copy of the intake note.
Hunter had remained silent during the examination.
But when Evelyn left the room, he asked Ramirez whether children could be arrested for making adults angry.
Ramirez documented the statement.
She filed a concern report.
The address listed in the chart was wrong.
The follow-up letter never reached Abigail.
“I should have done more,” Ramirez said.
“You tried.”
“Not enough.”
Abigail knew that feeling.
It did not help.
But she understood it.
Ramirez continued.
“I gave Hunter something that day.”
“What?”
“A small card with the hospital number and my name.”
Abigail remembered finding a folded card inside the stuffed fox weeks earlier.
She had assumed it came from school.
“Hunter hid it in the toy,” Abigail whispered.
The recorder may have turned on when he opened the fox.
Cole examined the device again.
A sliding switch sat near the battery compartment.
Hunter could have activated it accidentally while hiding the card.
The toy had then remained near him during repeated punishments.
No adult had planned to record the abuse.
