Chapter 1 - The Door Marcus Broke Open

“Move.”

First Sergeant Marcus Vance drove his shoulder into the half-closed hospital door.

The wooden panel slammed against the wall with a violent crack.

One of the two men in black suits stumbled sideways. The other threw out an arm to keep his balance.

Marcus stormed between them.

He had crossed three states without sleeping after receiving a whispered call from his nine-year-old daughter.

Now Lily lay awake in a private pediatric hospital room in Asheville, North Carolina.

One leg was locked inside a white cast.

A dark mark showed beneath the hair near her forehead.

Her fingers trembled above the blanket.

Marcus stopped breathing for half a second.

Then his military training took over.

He crossed the room in three controlled strides and dropped beside the bed.

“Dad…”

Lily stared at him as if she had stopped believing he would come.

Marcus took her uninjured hand between both of his.

“I’m here.”

Behind him, Miranda Sterling covered her mouth.

She wore a fitted pink dress and the shocked expression of a mother who wanted everyone to believe she had just discovered something terrible.

Beside her stood Charles Sterling, Lily’s grandfather.

His purple blazer, silver hair, and cold stare made him look more like the owner of the hospital than a worried relative.

The two suited men remained at the door.

Marcus scanned Lily’s cast, swollen face, IV line, and frightened eyes.

“What happened?”

Miranda stepped forward.

“She fell.”

Lily’s fingers tightened around Marcus’s hand.

Her eyes moved toward her mother.

Marcus followed the glance.

Miranda reached for the curtain control beside the bed.

Marcus caught the strap before she could pull it.

He ripped it from her hand and let it snap against the wall.

Charles’s face hardened.

“This is family business.”

Marcus slowly turned toward him.

“Then let her speak.”

The room became still.

Lily looked directly at Miranda.

Her lips trembled.

“Mom closed the curtain.”

Miranda took one involuntary step backward.

Marcus did not move.

But something inside him became terrifyingly calm.

👉 Lily had revealed only what her mother did—not what happened after the curtain hid the bed from view.
