Chapter 9 - The Transfer Team at the Elevator

Marcus called hospital security.

Charles laughed.

“My family funds this building.”

Marcus called the Asheville Police Department directly.

Then he contacted the military family advocacy liaison who had begun documenting the case during his flight.

He gave both agencies the room number, transfer order, and Grant’s name.

Three minutes later, the elevator opened.

Two private transport workers stepped into the pediatric corridor with a gurney.

Russell Dean walked behind them.

The heavyset investigator from Lily’s recording wore a dark jacket and carried a leather folder.

Nathan saw him through the doorway.

“That’s him.”

Russell stopped when he saw Marcus.

His confidence faltered only briefly.

He entered the room and held up the folder.

“We have authorization to transfer the patient.”

Marcus remained beside Lily.

“From whom?”

“Her legal guardian.”

“I am her legal guardian.”

Russell looked at Miranda.

She stared at the floor.

“Mrs. Sterling signed.”

Marcus held up the custody order.

“Her authority does not override mine.”

Russell turned toward Charles.

Charles said, “Proceed.”

The transport workers did not move.

They had expected frightened hospital staff and a sedated child.

Instead, they found a uniformed father, a nurse holding an incident report, and a former security guard recording everything.

Russell stepped toward the bed.

Marcus moved once.

He placed himself directly between Russell and Lily.

“Take another step.”

Russell stopped.

Marcus’s tone remained controlled.

It contained no threat that could be used against him.

It did not need one.

Police officers entered the hallway.

Russell immediately lifted his hands.

Charles’s face tightened.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

Nathan handed police his recording.

Nurse Emily gave them the transfer documents.

Marcus gave them Lily’s phone.

Russell glanced at Grant’s name on his own screen.

Then he made a decision.

“I want an attorney.”

One officer asked, “Where is Grant Sterling?”

Russell said nothing.

His phone rang again.

This time, police saw the location data before the screen went dark.

Grant was not far away.

He was inside the hospital administration wing.

The man who ordered Lily silenced had never left the building.

He had been watching the room through the camera system.

👉 Grant believed the hospital belonged to his family—but the security archive contained footage he had failed to erase.
