Chapter 4 - The Nurse Who Looked Behind the Curtain
Emily closed the door.
This time, the suited men remained outside.
Charles objected immediately.
“You cannot exclude my security.”
Marcus stood beside Lily.
“They are not coming near her.”
Emily’s hands trembled as she opened a locked drawer beneath the chart station.
She removed a folded incident form.
“I started writing this last night.”
Charles’s jaw tightened.
“Give me that.”
Marcus stepped into his path.
Emily kept the paper.
She explained that Lily arrived shortly after midnight.
Miranda claimed the girl had fallen down a staircase at the Sterling estate.
Lily’s injuries did not immediately match that story.
The cast treated a clean fracture to the lower leg.
But Lily also had bruising around one wrist and a mark on her forehead.
The emergency physician requested a child-protection consultation.
Charles arrived twenty minutes later.
The consultation was canceled.
“Canceled by whom?” Marcus asked.
“The hospital administrator.”
“Why?”
Emily looked at Charles.
“He said the family had already arranged a private specialist.”
Marcus’s voice hardened.
“That is not an answer.”
Emily continued.
After Lily was admitted, Miranda closed the curtain.
Two men stood near the bed.
Emily heard Lily crying and entered through the side medication door.
She saw Charles beside the window.
Miranda stood near the curtain control.
One of the suited men was holding Lily’s stuffed rabbit.
The second man was not there.
Instead, another adult male stood over the bed.
“Who?” Marcus asked.
Emily shook her head.
“I only saw the back of him. Dark jacket. Heavy build.”
“What was he doing?”
“He was asking Lily where she had hidden a phone.”
Lily looked at Marcus.
Marcus remembered the unknown number she used to call him.
Emily said the man leaned close and spoke harshly.
Lily tried to pull away.
Then Miranda noticed Emily and ordered her out.
“Did you see anyone strike Lily?”
“No.”
“Did you see anyone touch her cast?”
“No.”
Charles lifted his chin.
“Then this proves nothing.”
Emily looked at him.
“It proves the horse story was false.”
Miranda snapped, “I never said horse.”
Marcus slowly turned toward her.
She had just contradicted the message she sent him.
Miranda realized it too late.
Marcus picked up his phone.
“You told me she fell from a horse.”
Miranda’s face drained of color.
Charles looked at his daughter with disgust.
