Chapter 10 - The Camera Above the Door
Police secured the hospital security office.
Grant was found inside with the hospital administrator, Paul Mercer.
Several camera feeds displayed Room 417.
One showed Marcus beside Lily.
Another showed the hallway.
A third showed the private ambulance waiting outside.
Grant had been directing the entire transfer remotely.
He claimed he was protecting his niece from an unstable father.
Then investigators examined the system logs.
Someone had attempted to delete footage from the previous night.
The deletion failed because the hospital maintained an off-site backup for insurance compliance.
Marcus remained with Lily while Detective Sarah Holloway reviewed the recovered video.
She returned thirty minutes later.
Her expression was controlled.
But her eyes were angry.
“We have footage of Grant entering the room with Russell.”
Miranda began to cry again.
Charles asked, “What exactly does it show?”
“It shows enough.”
The camera did not capture the bed behind the closed curtain.
But it recorded audio and movement near the entrance.
Lily could be heard saying, “Please stop.”
Grant ordered Russell to find the phone.
Miranda said, “You’re scaring her.”
Charles replied, “Then make her cooperate.”
The curtain shook.
Lily cried out.
Nathan entered and demanded that Russell release her.
Grant ordered Nathan outside.
Then came the sentence that destroyed Charles’s claim of ignorance.
Charles said, “Do whatever is necessary before Marcus arrives.”
Marcus closed his eyes for one deliberate second.
He had imagined many versions of the truth during his flight.
None prepared him to hear Lily’s grandfather authorize her terror.
Detective Holloway continued.
“The footage also shows Miranda leaving the room at one point.”
Marcus looked at her.
“Where did you go?”
Miranda wiped her face.
“To get help.”
Charles laughed bitterly.
“You went to call the family attorney.”
Miranda whispered, “I called Marcus.”
Marcus checked his phone.
There had been no call.
She shook her head.
“I tried. Grant took my phone.”
Detective Holloway held up a sealed evidence bag.
Miranda’s phone had been recovered from Grant.
The call history showed one outgoing attempt to Marcus at 1:58 a.m.
It lasted two seconds before being disconnected.
For the first time, Marcus saw a small piece of resistance in Miranda.
Too little.
Too late.
But real.
Then the detective revealed something else.
At 2:12 a.m., Miranda sent a message to Lily’s old tablet.
CALL YOUR FATHER NOW.
Lily had not found the phone alone.
