Chapter 13 - The Threat Against Marcus
Military investigators joined the case before sunset.
Grant’s statement about a helicopter accident could have been empty intimidation.
But Marcus did not dismiss threats involving military equipment.
Neither did his command.
Investigators searched Grant’s phone and office.
They found messages to a defense subcontractor who supplied maintenance components to Marcus’s training base.
The messages did not prove sabotage.
They showed Grant had requested Marcus’s deployment schedule and aircraft assignment.
He claimed he wanted to plan a family surprise.
No one believed him.
Another message to Charles read:
IF THE SOLDIER KEEPS CUSTODY, WE REMOVE HIS LEVERAGE.
Charles replied:
DO NOT PUT DETAILS IN WRITING.
The words stopped short of a direct order.
They were still enough to reveal intent.
Miranda read the exchange and nearly collapsed.
“You knew?”
Charles looked at his daughter through the interrogation-room glass.
“I knew Grant was exploring options.”
“Options to kill my husband?”
Charles’s voice remained cold.
“Options to protect what your mother built.”
Lily’s grandmother had created the trust because she feared Charles and Grant would sell the family hotels for short-term profit.
She gave Lily a future voting interest precisely to stop them.
The sale Grant wanted would pay off private debts, conceal losses, and allow him to remain company president.
Marcus was not threatening the family.
He was protecting the safeguard Lily’s grandmother created.
That was why Grant needed him discredited, removed from custody, or frightened into surrender.
Marcus looked at Miranda.
“Did you know about these messages?”
“No.”
“Did you know Grant was investigating my base?”
“No.”
For once, Marcus believed her.
Miranda had participated in the cover-up at the hospital.
But Charles and Grant had concealed the darkest plans even from her.
Grant was charged with child endangerment, conspiracy, witness intimidation, evidence tampering, and attempted unlawful transfer of a minor.
Russell faced similar charges.
Charles was arrested for conspiracy and obstruction.
Hospital administrator Mercer was charged for falsifying medical records and facilitating the transfer.
Miranda was not arrested that day.
Her cooperation mattered.
But child services opened a separate investigation into her failure to protect Lily.
When an officer led Charles past Room 417, he looked at Marcus.
“You think you won?”
Marcus stood beside Lily’s bed.
“This was never a war.”
Charles smiled.
“Everything is war.”
Marcus looked down at his daughter.
