Chapter 2 - The Call From Room 417

Marcus had been stationed at a desert training base in California when Lily called him at 2:17 in the morning.

The number was unfamiliar.

At first, he heard only breathing.

Then a child’s whisper.

“Dad?”

Marcus sat upright on his cot.

“Lily?”

“Don’t call Mom.”

Every muscle in his body tightened.

“Where are you?”

“In the hospital.”

“What happened?”

The line went quiet.

Then Lily whispered, “Mom closed the curtain while they hurt me.”

Marcus stood so quickly that the metal chair beside him fell over.

“Who hurt you?”

A door opened on Lily’s end.

She gasped.

The call disconnected.

Marcus called back eleven times.

No answer.

He contacted every hospital within driving distance of the Sterling family estate.

The first four had no patient by Lily’s name.

At the fifth, a nervous receptionist refused to confirm anything.

That was enough.

Marcus contacted his commanding officer, arranged emergency leave, and boarded the first flight east.

During the journey, Miranda sent him one message.

LILY FELL FROM A HORSE. SHE’S STABLE. DO NOT CREATE A SCENE.

Lily had never ridden a horse alone.

Marcus called the Sterling estate.

Charles answered.

“It was an accident.”

“Let me speak to my daughter.”

“She’s sedated.”

“She called me.”

A pause followed.

Then Charles said, “You have been gone eight months. Do not return and pretend to be a father now.”

Marcus ended the call before anger destroyed his judgment.

He contacted the Asheville police.

They told him the hospital report listed a domestic fall witnessed by family members.

No investigation had been opened.

The Sterlings controlled half the county’s charitable boards.

Charles had donated the pediatric wing where Lily was being treated.

By the time Marcus entered Room 417, he already knew the family had built a wall around the truth.

Now Lily had placed the first crack in it.

Marcus looked at Miranda.

“What was behind the curtain?”

Miranda’s eyes filled with rehearsed tears.

“She is confused from medication.”

Lily whispered, “I wasn’t asleep.”

Charles stepped toward the bed.

“That is enough.”

Marcus rose.

“No. It is finally beginning.”

👉 Miranda claimed Lily’s medication caused confusion—but the hospital chart showed she had received nothing that could affect her memory.
