Chapter 7 - The Guard Who Had Seen Enough

Charles declined Grant’s call.

The older security guard, Nathan Ross, stepped into the room.

Charles glared at him.

“You were told to remain outside.”

Nathan closed the door behind him.

“I was also told the child had fallen.”

Marcus studied him.

Nathan had stood near the doorway since Marcus arrived.

He had avoided looking at Lily.

Not from indifference.

From guilt.

“What did you see?” Marcus asked.

Charles interrupted.

“Anything he says is protected by his employment agreement.”

Nathan looked at him.

“A contract does not cover child abuse.”

Miranda sat down hard in a chair.

Lily held Marcus’s hand with both of hers.

Nathan explained that Grant arrived at the hospital before dawn.

He brought a man named Russell Dean.

Russell was a private investigator who had previously handled “family problems” for Charles.

Russell entered Lily’s room while Charles ordered security to block the door.

Grant wanted the hidden phone.

Lily refused to say where it was.

Russell threatened to send Marcus to prison.

When that failed, he pulled Lily’s injured leg toward the edge of the mattress.

Nathan heard her cry out.

He entered despite orders.

The cast had already been placed, but the injury beneath it was fresh.

Marcus’s breathing slowed into the measured rhythm he used before dangerous operations.

“Did he strike her?”

Nathan shook his head.

“He grabbed her wrist and forced her upright. She hit the bed rail with her forehead.”

Lily began shaking.

Marcus immediately stopped the questions.

“That is enough.”

Nathan’s face tightened.

“I should have stopped it sooner.”

“Yes,” Marcus said. “You should have.”

Nathan accepted the words.

Charles pointed toward the door.

“You are fired.”

Nathan removed his earpiece and placed it on the table.

“Good.”

Then he took out his own phone.

“I recorded Grant and Russell in the hallway afterward.”

Charles lunged for it.

Marcus blocked him with one arm.

Nathan played the recording.

Grant’s voice was unmistakable.

“She still has the phone.”

Russell answered, “Then move her before the father gets here.”

Grant said, “The administrator will sign whatever transfer we need.”

The room went silent.

Lily was not supposed to remain in Asheville.

They had planned to move her to a private facility owned by the Sterlings.
