Chapter 11 - Why Miranda Closed the Curtain
Marcus asked everyone except Detective Holloway and Nurse Emily to leave.
Charles objected.
Police escorted him out.
Miranda remained near the rear wall.
Lily watched her with a mixture of fear and hope.
Marcus sat beside the bed.
“Tell us everything.”
Miranda looked at her daughter.
“Grant came to the house because Lily recorded the trust meeting.”
She had seen Lily run upstairs with the phone.
Grant followed.
When Lily fell, Miranda called an ambulance despite Charles insisting they use a private doctor.
At the hospital, Grant discovered the phone was missing.
He threatened to accuse Marcus of arranging the recording.
He also threatened Miranda with the loss of Lily.
“Charles said they would prove I was unstable too,” Miranda whispered. “He said Grant would take custody through the family foundation.”
Marcus’s expression did not soften.
“So you closed the curtain.”
Miranda nodded.
“Grant said he only wanted to talk to her.”
“You knew he was frightening her.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you open it?”
Miranda broke.
“Because he showed me documents saying he could have you arrested for espionage if the recording reached anyone.”
Marcus stared at her.
It was absurd.
But Miranda had grown up in a family where documents became weapons and authority was never questioned.
“He said your command would abandon you. He said Lily would lose both of us.”
“So you let Russell touch her.”
“I froze.”
Lily turned her face away.
Miranda stepped toward the bed.
“Baby—”
Marcus raised one hand.
“Do not approach her unless she asks.”
Miranda stopped.
Her pain was real.
But it did not erase Lily’s.
Detective Holloway asked whether Miranda was willing to make a complete statement against Charles and Grant.
Miranda looked toward the door.
Her entire life waited on the other side.
The father who controlled her money.
The brother who controlled the family business.
The name that had protected her from consequences and imprisoned her inside fear.
Then she looked at Lily.
“Yes.”
Charles shouted from the hallway.
“You will destroy this family.”
Miranda finally faced the door.
“No,” she said. “You did that when you taught us power mattered more than children.”
Lily began to cry quietly.
Miranda did not move closer.
